TORONTO – If there’s one thing Elon Musk has proved it’s that electric vehicles can be very powerful.

Still, when the Tesla Motors creator promised that the Model S P85D could shoot from 0 to 60 mph in just over three seconds at the push of a button, some were a bit skeptical.

But thanks to a dashcam and some unsuspecting passengers, we finally have proof that the P85D’s “Insane Mode” is just as crazy as Musk promised.

The video, shared by auto site DragTimes on YouTube, shows unwitting passengers squealing, swearing and hanging on for dear life as the vehicle accelerates to over 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds.

That kind of acceleration is comparable to some of the world’s fastest sports cars, including Lamborghini and the McLaren F1 supercar.

To use “Insane Mode,” the vehicle must first come to a complete stop. The driver can then touch a button on the car’s digital console which activates the super-speed mode.

Insane mode uses both of the vehicles motors to harness 691 horsepower at once.

At one point in the video, a young passenger’s smartphone flies out of her hands and sticks to the back of the car as it takes off, thanks to the g-force caused by the acceleration. DragTimes said it recorded 1.29 g during insane mode.

The P85D, available now starting at CAD$121,270, recently set a new world record for being the fastest production electric car.
