Warm weather wins and woes in Saskatoon

Watch above: The first month of 2015 is bringing with it some spring-like conditions that many, particularly construction workers, are taking advantage of. But, as Aaron Streck tells us, these melting conditions are causing concern for others.

SASKATOON – The weather this winter is a far cry from last year – one of the coldest on record. Despite the noticeable difference, this time last year was also above freezing.

“On the 23rd last year we reached a high of 0.4, on the 24th we reached a high of 3.5, so actually this particular stretch is not very different from what is in the forecast for the coming days,” said Environment Canada’s Natalie Hasell.

It maybe sloppy, slushy, dirty but construction crews are taking advantage of the above-seasonable temperatures.

“The nailers don’t want to be performing and the compressor starts acting up, it gets a little strenuous, you don’t get much production done,” said Phil Penner, owner of construction company Tri-Quest.

The Tri-Quest crew spends hours working in all kids of extremes. But the warmer the weather, the less amount of layers, the more mobility.

“We’ve been able to catch up and trying to get ahead but the mud slows a guy down a bit but other than that it’s been helpful definitely,” said Penner.

So far, this winter is trending above normal. While this warm spell is welcomed by most, it can create icy roads and sidewalks, and soften outdoor rinks.

“Next week it might be a little warmer and maybe in late afternoons there might be a little pooling but having the (Delta) Bessborough here, the rink on the north side, a little bit of a cloud cover doesn’t bother us a bit,” said Doug Porteous from Meewasin Valley Authority.

The above seasonal temperatures are expected to last into next week but we all know we’re not out of the woods just yet as spring isn’t for another couple of months.
