VANCOUVER – Residents of B.C.’s South Coast who are hoping to go skiing or snowboarding this weekend will find conditions to be less than ideal.

Rainfall warnings have been issued for the Fraser Valley, Howe Sound, Metro Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast and West Vancouver Island. Rainfall rates of four to six mm an hour will result in up to 100 mm of rain in some areas by Saturday morning.

Global BC meteorologist Mark Madryga says other areas will see 30 to 50 mm of rain over the next 30 hours.

These conditions could lead to flash floods and water pooling on the roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is also possible. Don’t approach washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

The heavy rain will also affect conditions on the mountains and ski hills. Madryga says the freezing level is on the rise, close to 2,500 metres by Friday night, which will lead to heavy rain to the tops of the mountains close to the Lower Mainland. Whistler and the Coquihalla to the summit will also see rain and wet conditions.

Much drier air is on the way by Sunday along with double-digit afternoon temperatures.
