UPDATE: Production of Shivay has been “indefinitely postponed.” No reason was given.
TORONTO — The movie Shivay, described as one of the biggest Bollywood films ever made, will begin production near Calgary at the end of February.
Award-winning Indian actor Ajay Devgn will direct and star in the movie, which is scheduled to shoot in Alberta until mid-April.
Devgn has told Indian media outlets that filming will take place in remote mountain regions. “It is going to be a very tough shoot,” he said.
Additional filming will take place in Poland and India.

Devgn and his team were in Alberta in November scouting locations for the movie.
Little is known about the plot of Shivay (also known as Shivaay) which was written by Sandeep Srivastava, but Devgn has called it “an action-packed film” with “a lot of intensity and drama.”
Among the film’s producers are Sam Chandola and Vikas Bhalla, co-founder of Vancouver-based IndoWest Films, and Montreal-born film industry veteran Alain Gagnon.
Shivay is benefitting from the Canada-India Audiovisual Coproduction Treaty, which came into effect last July and allows producers to “combine their creative, technical and financial resources to create audiovisual coproductions between both nations.”
By filming in Alberta, producers are able to take advantage of generous provincial grants and federal tax credits.
Shivay is due in Indian cinemas next January.
