Police look for suspects after shooting incident at Calgary Co-op store

CALGARY – Calgary police are searching for the gunman who opened fire outside a crowded northeast Calgary Co-Op store at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

At least three shots were fired from a rifle.

Two struck an SUV, injuring the 24-year-old male driver inside.  His passenger wasn’t injured.

The third shot went through the front door of the store on 52nd Street – no one inside was hurt.

“I saw a Pathfinder just come in and just fire shots at this one Chevrolet,” said Abraham Zaid, an employee at the Co-op.

“He just passed by, they were all in neutral. He fired the shots. I just heard three bangs. It looked like it was a tire shot. And he just passed by and everything went hectic.”

The injured man managed to drive himself to Peter Lougheed Hospital where he was treated and released.

His vehicle was taken away by police as part of their investigation. They’re also looking at video surveillance from the area.

Police believe this is likely a targeted attack but add it was extremely dangerous because bullets were flying and innocent people could have been hit.

“I think a shooting in any neighbourhood is a great concern for citizens of Calgary and the police service,” Acting Staff Sgt. Paul Magnus said.

“Any time that’s happening we’re taking great care in trying to arrest individuals involved and stop perpetrators from committing these kinds of crimes.”

A gang connection has not been ruled out.

Detectives from major crimes and the Guns and Gangs unit are involved in the search for both evidence and suspects.

They are trying to determine if this shooting is related to other recent violent incidents in the area.

Calgary police believe there are people who have information about the shooting, and they are urging them to come forward.
