Man, 51, dead after being fatally wounded by Bathurst, N.B., police

BATHURST, N.B. – A 51-year-old man is dead after being fatally wounded by police in northern New Brunswick.

In a statement, Bathurst police Chief Eugene Poitras said the incident occurred around 11:25 a.m. Monday while police were conducting an investigation.

Poitras said the man was taken to the Chaleur Regional Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police are not releasing the man’s identity because they say they are waiting to notify his family.

The man had just exited a train with his wife after attending a hockey game in Montreal, according to tweets sent by reporter Béatrice Seymour, who works for the French-language daily Acadie Nouvelle.

The wife was not injured and spent most of the day being questioned by police, according to a report by CKLE-FM

Seymour said the victim was a businessman from Tracadie-Sheila.

Bathurst police say they won’t provide any more details while the incident is being investigated by the RCMP from Nova Scotia.
