New sighting of Orca calf in Puget Sound

WATCH: A baby Orca spotted near Puget Sound.

Whale watchers will be happy to hear the region’s newest baby Orca looks to be doing well. A whale watcher caught a rare glimpse of the calf swimming with the J-Pod in Puget Sound on Saturday.

The calf, named J-50, was seen with J-16, believed to be her grandmother. She was born just after Christmas, and was first sighted near Pender Island December 30th.

Conservationists are celebrating the J-Pod’s newest arrival. The pod is a part of a community of Orcas known as Southern resident killer whales, which are classified as endangered. Just last month the pod lost one of its mature females. J-32 , who was pregnant, was found dead near Comox in early December.
