REGINA – Ombudsman Saskatchewan has received a significant increase in complaints about the quality of long-term care in the province in the last two months.

“In 2013, we averaged about 12 complaints per month for all regional health authorities and other health entities combined (not counting the ministry), and long-term care would have been a fraction of that,” wrote Leila Dueck, director of communications for the office.

Since November 20, 2014, there have been 27 complaints about long-term care.

The spike in complaints came around the same time allegations of neglect and assault of residents at Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home were put in the spotlight.

“We are still in the process of working through these complaints, including conducting interviews to learn more about each situation. It is too soon to say how each one will be addressed and what their outcomes will be,” said Dueck.
