Heavy rain causes significant flooding at a Whalley trailer park

Heavy rainfall is causing serious issues at a trailer park in Surrey and a major cleanup operation is underway.

Residents at the Park Mobile Court on King George Boulevard near 96th Avenue say drainage issues have been a concern for a while as there are several creeks in the area.

Culverts have been clogged by debris in the past.

The floodwater at the park mobile court is knee high at some points.

Fire and Hydro crews have been there to investigate.

Many residents tell Global News there is nowhere for them to go.

“They need to do whatever it takes to fix that,” says Paul McDermott who owns a trailer in the area. “They’ve been ordered to do it. The real problem is if a legal body orders you to do something and then you don’t, and nothing bad happens, there’s no penalty. We need to get it enforced.”

McDermott says the culvert floods every time it rains and this is the sixth flood he has experienced so far, but getting hold of the landlord has proved difficult.

Sue Hammell, an MLA for Surrey-Green Timbers, was on site Sunday night and says the situation is inexcusable.

This is municipality that needs to make sure its citizens are protected, and there is provincial government that needs to make sure the landlord and tenancy branch is there to protect the people in this trailer park, says Hammell. We have people who are trying to make their way thorough life, they have an investment in these trailers, and they have a stream running right through it and a landlord that does not seem to be able to respond to their concerns. We need to take the concerns of this community seriously and fix it.

There is concern erosion has damaged the foundation of several trailers.

Crews are now assessing the structural stability of the foundations.

It’s not clear how long it will take for the floodwaters to recede.
