Sunwing investigating after 12-year-old spent night alone in YVR

WATCH: Sunwing says they’re investigating after a girl was left alone in YVR overnight without any supervision. Asa Rehman explains.

A Surrey family is wanting to warn others about their granddaughter’s experience as she waited to board a Sunwing flight to Toronto.

They’re claiming that despite pleas to stay with their 12-year-old past the security line for a late night flight, she ended up spending the night alone at YVR as her plane was delayed until the early morning.

“I woke up this morning and I haven’t stopped worrying about it,” said Janice Sheldon, the girl’s grandmother.

The grandparents said they took the girl to the airport for her 12:30 a.m. flight back to Toronto, but Sunwing told them that wasn’t allowed.

According to Wes Sheldon, the girl’s grandfather, a Sunwing agent said the girl would be supervised for a $50 fee. But she was left alone, sending messages to her mother during the night that she was alone at the airport.

“She was taken to the gate and left alone. For the entire night,” said Wes. “Completely unassisted, when we were told she would be looked after.”

The flight finally left at 7 a.m. this morning. Both Sunwing and YVR say they’re looking into the matter, and according to Wes, Sunwing offered them a refund on the $50 fee.

“They offered nothing, did nothing. To offer the $50 fee back was, to be honest with me, insulting,” he said.
