7-year-old girl dies in accident in Lions Bay

VANCOUVER – Just days before Christmas, a family in Lions Bay is suddenly mourning the loss of a young child.

Seven-year-old Erin Moore died when rocks fell on her while hiking a trail on Unnecessary Mountain on Monday. She was out with her mother and a group of other hikers when a creek bed started to crumble and debris tumbled on top of her. Heavy rain left the ground in the area saturated and may have made it unstable.

Other hikers, including some nurses, tried desperately to rescue Moore but she was unconscious and wasn’t breathing when they reached her. They did perform CPR, but they were unable to save her.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

She’s being remembered as a lively little girl who wasn’t afraid of anything.

“All I can say, on behalf of the village, that we’ve endured quite a tragedy,” said Karl Buhr, the Mayor of Lions Bay and a family friend. “The village is going to need some time to process and recover from this.”

The flags at City Hall in Lions Bay are flying at half-mast and a memorial will be set up for the girl so people can leave their respects.

Buhr said Erin was “unstoppable.”

“She was a force of nature, she would run into a tree and knock the tree down. She was a lovely little girl.”

The trails in that area are now closed.
