Mother charged with murdering 8-year-old daughter currently unfit to stand trial

VANCOUVER – A 41-year-old mother who has been charged with murder in the death of her child is not yet fit to stand trial.

Lisa Batstone has been charged with the 2nd-degree murder of her eight-year-old daughter, Teagan Batstone. The little girl’s body was found in the trunk of a car in Surrey last week and Lisa was arrested shortly after. S/Sgt. Jennifer Pound with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says they believe Teagan was already deceased and transported to the area in Surrey.

Lisa appeared in court on Thursday and was crying in the prisoner’s box. A court psychiatrist, who was ordered to see her last week, has found her to be under severe emotional distress. Her lawyer, Craig Sicotte, described her as fragile and currently unfit to stand trial. She will now undergo another psychiatric assessment and will be back in court on Jan. 5.

As she was led away, she blew kisses to her family members in the courtroom.

A memorial was held for Teagan on Wednesday night, with many remembering her as a “bright spark” with a special smile.
