WATCH: Construction underway on Sicamous water treatment plant

SICAMOUS – The District of Sicamous is getting a long-awaited fix for its water quality woes. Construction of a water treatment plant began in November. The district has been under various water notices and advisories since destructive flooding in the area in 2012. A water quality advisory is also currently in place.

“That flood interfered with the intake of our water system and with that flood there was a lot of debris and mud and so forth and so it knocked out our water system,” says Sicamous Mayor Terry Rysz, referring to flooding in the Two Mile subdivision. “Even right up until now the turbidity in the water made Interior Health put restrictions on our water.”

The new treatment plant is expected to turn the situation around.

“Currently folks in Sicamous are buying their drinking water,” says Rysz. “Now we will have potable water right out of our taps for seniors. It is going to be healthy, clean, clear drinking water.”

The project is expected to be finished in 2015 and many involved are looking forward to celebrating with a glass of fresh water.
