WATCH: RCMP baited snowmobile leads to arrest of Okanagan man

KELOWNA – He took the bait and now he’s been hooked on vehicle theft charges.

Just hours before the Mounties held a news conference in Kelowna Thursday morning to announce the unveiling of this winter’s Bait Sled Program, a thief fell for the foil.

RCMP had parked a pickup truck with an attached trailer holding a snowmobile at a hotel near the Kelowna airport. A GPS device was hidden in the snowmobile.

At about 5:00 a.m., police received a signal that the truck and trailer were being moved.

Officers tracked the signal and arrested a 31-year-old north Okanagan man who is known to police from previous investigations.

He’s being held in custody pending a court appearance.

Police say curtailing snowmobile thefts has to be a joint effort between themselves and the machine owners.

It’s advised the sleds be parked in well lit, high traffic areas and not where they can be loaded onto a truck.

Owners should also keep a record of the vehicle identification number, disable tow vehicles when not in use and invest in anti-theft devices.
