Zahra had tried to escape her husband last year. She and her two sons spent at least three weeks in an emergency shelter in 2013, Global News learned Tuesday.

Dr. Roz Roach, the executive director of the shelter, said Zahra had left her husband at the time but eventually left the shelter. Roach didn’t know Zahra had returned to her husband after leaving the shelter.
