WATCH: Online Producer Peter Meiszner on Downtown Vancouver’s expensive shared rentals
It’s no secret that finding a place to live on a budget in Vancouver is tough.
Vacancy rates are hovering around 1.8 per cent, down more than one percentage point from 2013.
One bedroom apartments are regularly going for $1,600 or more in the downtown core, and many people are choosing to live with roommates to help keep costs down.
But there are several listings that are taking the concept of “shared living” to the extreme.
Take for example this ad, currently on Craigslist, for “part” of an apartment in Downtown Vancouver.
The ad titled “Private Space, Great Apartment” was posted on Sunday and reads “I am renting a private space in the living room.”
The space is actually a mattress, on the floor in the corner of the living room, sectioned off with some curtains. The apartment is near Rogers Arena.
A quick search of Craigslist finds more “shared space” rentals currently available in downtown Vancouver:
- $550
- “really nice den”
- Available December 1
- $650
- fully furnished room
- Available immediately
For smaller apartments, Vancouver’s low vacancy rate is even worse, hovering at only 1.2 per cent for studio apartments, the most affordable housing type in the downtown core.
