TORONTO – A police dog is back on duty after inhaling a quantity of cocaine during a vehicle search in California last week.
According to El Cerrito Police, officers requested the assistance of the canine unit during a traffic stop on Wednesday.
During the search of the vehicle, Koda located a small amount of suspected cocaine and inhaled some of it during the process.
Koda was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic where the dog tested positive for the presence of a stimulant, police said.
Koda was treated and returned to service the following day.
Canines are frequently used to assist officers in the detection of hidden drugs in vehicles,” police said in a statement. “While every effort is made to ensure the safety of the canines, the discovery of suspected drugs can lead to this situation.”
One person was arrested during the vehicle search.
