Driver alive after steel beam pierces windshield of semi cab on Hwy1

VANCOUVER – The driver of a semi is lucky to be alive this morning after a serious accident on Highway 1 at the Brunette exit in Coquitlam.

The Port Mann Freeway Patrol says the commercial truck was carrying 24 steel ‘I’ beams and was travelling westbound on Highway 1 when the driver had to brake hard.

The beams shifted forward 21 feet, with one piercing through the cab. It pinned the driver who did have some trouble breathing but otherwise, is fine.

The commercial vehicle enforcement unit arrived on scene shortly after the incident to continue investigation.

Traffic on Highway 1 westbound was heavily backed up for hours due to the incident.
