TORONTO — A Canadian film is among the nominees announced Tuesday for the 30th Film Independent Spirit Awards.
Mommy, from Quebec’s Xavier Dolan, is in the running for Best International Film — up against films from the U.K., Sweden, Poland, Russia and Philippines.
Ontario native Martin Short is part of the ensemble cast of Inherent Vice, which will be honoured with the Robert Altman Award.
Leading the way, with six nominations, is Birdman. It’s up for Best Feature, Best Director (Alejandro G. Iñárritu), Best Male Lead (Michael Keaton), Best Supporting Female (Emma Stone), Best Supporting Male (Edward Norton) and Best Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki).
Right behind Birdman are Boyhood and Nightcrawler, with five nominations each.
In the Best Feature category, Birdman and Boyhood are up against Love is Strange, Selma and Whiplash.
In the lead acting categories, nominees are Marion Cotillard, Rinko Kikuchi Kumiko, Julianne Moore, Jenny Slate, Tilda Swinton, André Benjamin, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Keaton, John Lithgow and David Oyelowo.
Supporting nods went to Patricia Arquette, Jessica Chastain, Carmen Ejogo, Andrea Suarez Paz, Emma Stone, Riz Ahmed, Ethan Hawke, Alfred Molina, Edward Norton and J.K. Simmons.
The awards will be handed out Feb. 21.
