EDMONTON — It’s that time of year again, Christmas has officially arrived in Churchill Square.

The annual Christmas on the Square Holiday Light Up was held Saturday. The main event was of course the lighting of the massive Christmas tree, followed by a spectacular fireworks display.

The giant white spruce tree arrived in the square late last week. On Wednesday, Epcor crews were busy stringing more than 14,000 lights on it.

An entire afternoon of festivities took place Saturday. Events included roving choirs, balloon artists and live entertainment. Food trucks were also on site.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Mayor Don Iveson was on hand for the light up. But it was Santa himself who stopped by to illuminate the tree.

This year’s tree was donated by Millar Western Forest Products.
