Social networking app not being used as intended

A new app that started out as a friendly social networking tool is out of control, according to students who use it.

The app called “Communet” was intended to be a space for commentary about clubs, exams, cafeteria food, and other school-related topics.

But it’s turned into a controversial space for nameless students to post cruel comments, including racist and sexual remarks.

“Really nasty things. If someone was on the edge this could push them over the edge,” said one student Global News spoke with.

“It was really mean degrading people and really rude things about them,” said another.

It’s become so bad it’s prompted warnings from the school boards.

Bullying expert Kim Edwards of the Dare To Care Anti-Bullying Program says she was worried right from the start.

“My first impression was is was a disaster in the making,” said Edwards.

Communet’s developers say they are working on future safeguards that could include an automatic flagging system, so that nasty comments can be deleted immediately.
