UPDATE: One man dead after house fire in east Vancouver

The coroner has been called to the scene of a fire today in East Vancouver that gutted an old home and forced one man to jump for his life.

The fire broke out this afternoon on Reid Street near Rupert Street and East 29 Avenue. The blaze quickly engulfed a large part of the house.

Firefighters say the blaze started in the home’s kitchen and the house was not equipped with a working smoke detector.

The house was home to nine people, a family of three and six others.

Fire crews responded quickly, and but it’s not known whether everyone got out.

One tenant says he had to escape through a second floor window.

The coroner confirms there was a fatality as a result of the fire. It is believed the victim is a man in his fifties. His name has not been released.
