TORONTO – Off-duty Ontario Provincial Police officers who are attending Remembrance Day events are being told to wear their work uniforms, bullet-proof vests, and carry firearms.
Officers normally appear in ceremonial uniforms for Nov. 11 services but the recent deaths of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo in Ottawa and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent in Quebec has prompted the move.
The fatal shooting of Cirillo at the National War Memorial in Parliament Hill has motivated some forces to rethink the safety of their off-duty officers.
Toronto Police Association President Mike McCormack recently proposed the idea of having Toronto police officers carry firearms when not on duty.
However, Chief Bill Blair swiftly rejected the call saying there isn’t a direct threat to its members.
