MONTREAL – As fans streamed in to Percival Molson Stadium to watch a thrilling game in which the Montreal Alouettes came back and defeated the Toronto Argonauts 17-14 to clinch a playoff spot, two dozen volunteers hauled more than 13,000 pounds of food outside.

“We’ve got a truck ready to load,” said Theo Evangelidis, a volunteer. “And then we’ll enjoy the rest of the day.”

Purolator and the Alouettes are co-sponsors of the Tackle Hunger food drive, a nationwide program that in Montreal benefits Sun Youth.

Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items or cash donations to the game, and in exchange they can have their picture taken with the Grey Cup. All of the donations stay in Montreal.

Sun Youth food bins were placed outside the stadium entrances, and by the end of the first quarter they were overflowing with canned goods.

“We’re going to be distributing Christmas baskets very soon, so everybody is starting to get ready for that,” said Nicolas Carpentier, a Sun Youth spokesperson.

“Poverty and hunger never stop.”

Nationwide, the Tackle Hunger program is doing better this year than last year.

“In total last year we did over $1.2 million pounds of food,” said Callie Scott, a spokesperson for Purolator.  “And we’re already over 1.3 million pounds of food this year alone.”
