VANCOUVER – Richmond RCMP, the City of Richmond, ICBC and concerned members of the community are teaming up to remind citizens that as the dark and rainy weather returns, everyone needs to do their part to be safer on the roads.

On Oct. 20 an elderly man was hit and killed at St. Albans Road and another elderly pedestrian was seriously injured when they was hit by a car on Minoru Road on Wednesday.

On Thursday, officials kicked off a pedestrian safety campaign to try and create a ‘cultural shift.’

“We are trying to cause a cultural shift in the walking behaviours of our citizens,” says Corporal Stephanie Ashton, Richmond RCMP media relations officer. “We want to reach as many people as we can.”

The, campaign, called #SLOW, stands for Stop, Look, Observe then Walk.  “To reach as many people as possible we are using a multi-faceted approach which includes this major event,” says Ashton. “We will be giving out hundreds of reflective decals, and stopping traffic to do it. We are using social media to get the message out as well as face to face contact.”

“As we head into the time change next weekend we are preparing to get the #SLOW message out to as many people as possible. It is our hope that we will reduce the number of pedestrian deaths and injuries in Richmond by reminding our citizens to walk safely,” adds Ashton.
