Woman dead on arrival at hospital after police open fire at Toronto home

TORONTO – Ontario’s police watchdog has identified a woman who died this morning after Toronto police were called to a house and fired at least one shot.

The Special Investigations Unit says Sylvia Klibingaitis, 52, died after the incident in the city’s north end.

Toronto police Const. Wendy Drummond says a call came in around 9:30 a.m. about a woman with a knife at a home on Wedgewood Drive, near Yonge Street and Cummer Avenue.

An SIU spokeswoman says police fired at least once.

The police watchdog says the woman was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead on arrival.

The SIU is an arm’s-length agency that investigates incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
