RCMP are investigating an accident linked to a mudslide on Highway 1 in Coquitlam.
Crews took almost 12 hours to clear debris that covered two westbound lanes of Highway 1.
According to Port Mann Freeway Patrol, the rain-soaked dirt came tumbling down just before the Brunette Avenue exit. Along with the debris on the highway, a guard rail and part of the retaining wall at the site have also been affected.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said a drainage pipe broke last night and caused the bank to erode, spilling materials on the two right lanes of Highway 1.
Maintenance crews responded but due to darkness and continued rain were not able to access the area for repairs immediately. Once the rain eased off, crews were able to repair and stabilize the slope.
