Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

It is evident from Cirillo’s social media pages that he was a family man.

He frequently used the hashtags #family and #myson.

He often posted photos of his young son and his dogs on Instagram.

A memorial page has been set up on Facebook to remember the man.

Cirillo is being mourned as a hero and a true Canadian.

Here are some of the comments left on our media sites:

Claire Walker – “I Thank you for your courage and your service. I cannot imagine the pain and sorrow.”

Bill Thompson – “My sincerest condolences to the family of the young soldier who was gunned down so cowardly. The country’s thoughts and prayers are with you.”

Alex Villalta – “What a sad day for democracy. Cpl. Nathan Cirillo is a war hero and should be honoured as such.”

Despite Wednesday’s events, many in Ottawa don’t want the world to remember their city like this – in the shadows of a deadly attack.

People are using the hashtag #MyOttawa to share with the world the things they love about their city.

This weekend, a grassroots memorial is being planned in Montreal for both Nathan Cirillo and Patrice Vincent, the soldier killed Monday in another attack in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

The memorial is set to take place Saturday at Dorchester Square.
