SASKATOON – On the City of Saskatoon’s list of construction priorities, two proposed interchanges are now being bumped up.

Construction of an overpass at Boychuk Drive and Highway 16 as well as McOrmond and College Drives may begin as early as next October.

“Often when you have traffic congestion, people try to take short cuts so we are seeing some unsafe manoeuvres and that is prompting us to expedite the construction,” said Angela Gardiner, the city’s transportation director.

A report in next week’s council agenda recommends $2 million in funding be approved to hire an owner’s engineer who would get the projects rolling.

Each interchange is expected to cost $35 million.

Funding hasn’t been finalized but the city is looking to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure and area developers to contribute.

Originally, these two projects were scheduled to proceed in 2022. If funding is approved, the new timeline for completion is the end of 2017.
