Transit Police, YVR ramp up security

Vancouver Transit Police have ramped up security in the wake of events in Ottawa this morning, but say for transit users it’s “business as usual.”

Transit spokesperson Anne Drennan said they “have all available on-duty officers out on the system and they are maintaining a high-visibility presence. We have our police dogs and handlers out… and our dogs are trained as explosive sniffing dogs.”

Although there has been no threat to the TransLink system, Drennan says they are also asking the general public to assist them in maintaining safe conditions.

“We’re asking the public to let us know if anyone is acting suspiciously or if they see any packages that are left behind or look unusual.”

If you see any suspicious activity text (87-77-77) or call Transit Police (604-515-8300).

Meanwhile, Steve Hankinson, VP of Operations for Vancouver International Airport, says the airport has increased vigilance today.

“We are working very closely with our security partners and police. We have increased the number of visible patrols, so you will see more RCMP and security teams today.”

Hankinson says they encourage travellers to ensure their flights are leaving on time, but the airport’s operations are running as normal.
