Port Metro Vancouver will launch a new licensing system next year for container trucks, hoping to reduce “intense competition” between too many trucking companies who are undercutting each other.

The port says the goal of the new licensing system is to “balance the number of registered trucks with the amount of available work and bring stability to port operations.”

GPS data from 2,000 trucks currently registered to serve the port was analyzed, and preliminary findings indicate that there are more trucks registered than required to service the port.

The introduction of a Truck Licensing System is a result of a plan announced by the federal and provincial governments in March 2014.

Port Metro Vancouver hopes to implement the new licensing system by February 2015. There is still one more round of consultation, and a transition program to help truck operators who do not meet the new requirements.
