TORONTO — Days of Our Lives actor Freddie Smith was involved in a car accident Tuesday that nearly claimed the life of his girlfriend.
Police said Smith, 26, was behind the wheel of a 2009 Mazda 6 that flipped over on a highway near Ashtabula, about one hour northeast of Cleveland, Ohio.

Smith suffered only minor injuries but passenger Alyssa Tabit was rushed to hospital with critical injuries after being freed from the car.
Smith, who plays Sonny Kiriakis on Days of Our Lives, is a native of Ashtabula. He earned a Daytime Emmy Award nomination last year in the Outstanding Younger Actor category.
He also starred as Marco Salazar during the third season of 90210.
The Highway Patrol alleged alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.
