Three cases of enterovirus confirmed in Fredericton

FREDERICTON, N.B. – Adults who work with young children say they’re taking three confirmed enterovirus cases in the Fredericton area very seriously.

Jenny Gaines operates Sunny Days Children’s Centre in Fredericton and says keeping the children safe is a top priority in her facility.

“Any health outbreak of any sort concerns us,” she said. “We’re monitoring their activity on an hourly basis and as soon as they show any symptoms of being ill, if there’s any signs of fever, we’re watching.”

The New Brunswick Department of Health says although three children have tested positive for the virus, they still don’t know if they have the EV-D68 strain.

That’s the same strain that’s been sending children across the United States and parts of Canada to hospital.

The department says enteroviruses are related to the common cold virus and they’re asking people to wash their hands regularly and stay home if they are sick.

Other businesses are keeping a close eye on the virus.

Staff at the My Gym children’s fitness centre are continuing to clean up on a regular basis.

They say keeping equipment clean keeps children and staff healthy.

“We don’t want our kids to get sick here so we try and cut down on as many germs as possible,” said staff member Robyn Caissie.
