UPDATE: Police ID victim from Saturday’s fatal hit-and-run

REGINA – A 27-year-old man is dead after being struck by a car at the intersection of Saskatchewan Drive and Albert Street.

Police said witnesses saw 27 year-old Rafiqul Islam get hit at around 8:30 p.m. Saturday. A search was conducted by police but they couldn’t find the driver or SUV involved in the crash.

“I can’t believe that, you know, because in here he’s my best friend. There’s nobody else here, you know,” said Shajib Sarker, the victim’s uncle.

According to Sarker, the victim moved from Bangladesh to Canada nearly three years ago. He worked at a restaurant before finding a job in construction. Part of his earnings went back home to support his family.

He was on his way to a nearby Tim Horton’s restaurant to cap off a day of Eid festivities, said Sarker.

“He doesn’t even get angry anytime, always laughing. Whatever you say to him, he didn’t get angry. Always was laughing, and everybody liked him,” said Sarker.
Aminul Sarkar, a cousin of the victim, flew in from Toronto Sunday morning.

“Nobody wants to see this kind of thing,” said Sarkar. “He’s my family member. He’s a very good man, gentle man, very hardworking man, he was honest.”

The intersection was closed for a period of time Saturday night for the investigation, but has since reopened.

Police are asking the public for help in locating a dark-coloured SUV with front-end damage. Anyone with information is asked to call Regina Police at 306-777-6500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
