OTTAWA – Star defenceman Erik Karlsson has been named the new captain of the Ottawa Senators.

He takes over from Jason Spezza, who was traded to the Dallas Stars over the summer. He wore the C for just one season, replacing longtime captain Daniel Alfredsson when he signed with the Red Wings before the start of last season.

The Senators also announced Thursday that they have signed forward Bobby Ryan to a seven-year, $50.75-million contract extension.
