Incumbent Cesar Palacio has been re-elected in Ward 17 after defeating opponent Alejandra Bravo for the third time.

Palacio won 46 per cent of the vote this time around, to Bravo’s 43.7 per cent. Saeed Selvam came a distant third with 7.8 per cent.

In the 2003 Toronto election, Palacio beat Bravo by 791 votes – he won again in 2006, this time beating Bravo by just 281 votes. Bravo, a manager at The Maytree Foundation, didn’t run in the 2010 election, which Palacio won with about 42 per cent of the vote.

Campaigning in Ward 17 went from the sidewalks to the courts at the end of September, when Palacio served Bravo with a libel notice accusing a canvasser of distributing a flyer about library cuts Palacio called “false and defamatory.” Bravo has denied having anyone working on her campaign distribute the flyer, calling Palacio’s legal move a “legal bullying tactic.”
