EDMONTON — Albertans will head to the polls Oct. 27 to vote in four separate byelections.
Three of the byelections are in Calgary and one in Edmonton. The Tories hold 57 of 87 seats in the Alberta Legislature, so the results won’t affect the balance of power.
Here’s a closer look at the candidates in Edmonton-Whitemud, which was held by former premier Dave Hancock. He announced in early September he was resigning from politics.
Progressive Conservative Party: Stephen Mandel
Edmonton’s former mayor, Mandel was appointed by Premier Jim Prentice as health minister. He’s one of two unelected ministers in Prentice’s cabinet.
New Democratic Party: Bob Turner
Turner is a doctor at Edmonton’s Cross Cancer Institute.
Wildrose: Tim Grover
Grover, who took part Karen Leibovici’s 2013 Edmonton mayoral campaign, says he’ll focus his campaign on business.
Alberta Party: Will Munsey
Munsey has been president of the Alberta Party for two years.
Liberal Party: Donna Wilson
Wilson is a nurse and a professor at the University of Alberta. She is the second female candidate the Liberals have nominated in the four byelections.
Green Party: René Malenfant
Malenfant is a Ph.D. student at the University of Alberta.
