WATCH: Parents of missing West Kelowna man break ranks with the RCMP

WEST KELOWNA – For the past seven years, Glenda and Gordon Derbyshire and police have been holding news conferences at the Kelowna Detachment, pleading for information about the disappearance of Aaron Derbyshire.

The 22 year old man vanished after attending the Level nightclub in downtown Kelowna on September 30 2006. His parents knew there was something wrong when Aaron failed to show up for a family photo session. His cell phone was left behind. His bank accounts idle.

Usually the RCMP organize a news conference on the anniversary of high profile cases, like Derbyshire, to keep the case in the spotlight but not this year. The Derbyshires have been told there won’t be any news coverage.

That perhaps prompted them to talk to Global Okanagan News to share something the public has never been told: They believe Aaron is dead and his body was burned.

“We’re convinced that Aaron was accidentally killed and it was covered up by Aaron’s body being taken and burned on a big slash fire. We believe there’s a small group of people that know exactly what happened to him that night and it’s just a matter of time before those individuals are exposed,” says Glenda Derbyshire.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The Derbyshires say the RCMP is aware of this new information – that Derbyshire was taken from the Level nightclub and his body was burned in a slash pile.  However, the Derbyshires were cautioned to not go public with the information because police said it might jeopardize their investigation. But the Derbyshires feel the investigation is going nowhere.

They say they obtained the new information about the disappearance of their son after reaching out to a secretive group.

“We obtained the services of a group that specializes in finding missing people and we were given information from them. Some of the information we got shortly after Aaron disappeared, the rest of it came just within this past year,” says Derbyshire.

The Derbyshires always knew something happened at the club but say it’s new that his death was allegedly accidental with his body burned in a forestry slash pile.

“I’m pretty convinced. Although it’s hard to think that that’s what happened. It’s sad, but yes,” says Derbyshire.

A Kelowna RCMP spokesperson says they’re aware of the new theories about the disappearance of Aaron Derbyshire.  Cst. Kris Clark say investigators have followed up on them, adding police won’t comment on rumours and speculation.
