WINNIPEG – A fire gutted several classrooms, the library and the daycare space at Mary Duncan School in The Pas early Sunday, Mayor Alan McLauchlan said.

The school is closed Monday morning following the fire, which was reported to emergency services at about 2 a.m. Sunday.

Photos taken by McLauchlan show the damage to the centre of the school, he said.

While part of the school is still standing, all but the gym suffered extensive smoke and water damage, McLauchlan said Monday morning.

Staff worked to contact students and families with alternative arrangements on Sunday afternoon, the school website said.

The loss of the school is a blow to the community, said McLauchlan, who toured the building with Manitoba Multiculturalism and Literacy Minister Flor Marcelino just last week. It offered adult education as well as programming for children, he said.
