TORONTO – Car enthusiasts around the world likely shed a few tears as a rare Porsche 918 Spyder supercar went up in flames next to an Ontario gas station Sunday night.

The incident was caught on video north of Toronto near Hurontario Street and King Street in Caledon and posted on YouTube.

Witnesses say the gas overflowed and ignited from the exhaust heat. No injuries were reported.

However, the car was completely totaled in the fire.

The hybrid vehicle’s starting price is US$845,000 and has a limited worldwide distribution of 918 units.

The supercar is reportedly owned by Toronto Bay Street investor and CBC Dragons’ Den star Michael Wekerle.

Just a couple of weeks ago, the rare sports car was spotted on the streets of Waterloo, Ont.

It’s unclear if that vehicle is the same one involved in the fire.
