WINNIPEG – Winnipeg’s former entomologist could be returning to city hall, this time as a city councillor.
For nearly a decade Taz Stuart was the city’s bug expert but the city mysteriously cut ties with him last year.
“Everything is good, we left on mutually agreeable terms and all is good so we’ll see if I can go and come back in a different form,” said Stuart.
But now Stuart is running for city council.
“I’m trying to better the city of Winnipeg for the residents in Fort Garry and River Heights section,” said Stuart.
That’s the same ward incumbent John Orlikow has led for the past five years, but Orlikow isn’t worried about running against another big name.
“I’ve had Jeff Currier run against me, The Nighthawk,” said Orlikow.
But residents from the ward and even Stuart himself say his name could draw votes.
“It will help, name recognition of course is big,” said Stuart.
“He might get it just because people know who he is and they liked him,” said one River Heights resident.
If elected, Stuart says he’ll push for big projects. “One of the big things on my mind is getting at the Waverley underpass right off the bat, that should be something on council’s mind. Rapid transit is another one that’s coming through the backyards so let’s put that on the card, it’s something that should personally go forward,” said Stuart.
Orlikow has other plans. “We need to get more streets fixed, we need to be addressing the combined sewer problem that we have in this neighbourhood, we need to be attacking Dutch elm disease a lot better,” said Orlikow.
Stuart will officially file for city councillor on Saturday before the deadline Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
