Kevin Maryk sentenced to 4 years for abducting children

WINNIPEG – The man who abducted his children and kept them from their mother for four years will be out of jail in a little over a year.

A judge sentenced Kevin Maryk Thursday to four years in prison, but with credit for time already served awaiting trial and sentencing, his prison term will be complete in 374 days.

“I’m not happy, obviously I’m not happy,” said Emily Cablek, the mother of Dominic and Abby, who were 7 and 5 respectively when their dad took them on a vacation and never returned. “It’s more than I expected, which obviously is a good thing.”

“I think this is a start,” said Det.Sgt. Shaunna Neufeld, of the Winnipeg Police Service’s missing persons unit. “We would have liked to see this individual get 10 years. ”

Maryk took Abby and Dominic for a court-approved two-week vacation in August 2008. Emily Cablek, who had custody of their children, didn’t see them again until police found them in Mexico in 2012.

The children were living in a townhouse in Guadalajara that was surrounded by surveillance cameras, barbed wire and guard dogs. They were moved frequently, didn’t have contact with other children and didn’t go to school during their four years with their father, and their mother has said despite counselling, they have struggled to readjust to life with her in Canada.

“Their dad may think he is coming out to kids that worship him still,” said Cablek. “They were confused and they had a lot of growing to do and they have done a lot of it.”
