The City of Vancouver is teaming up with two environmental groups to conduct an oil spill simulation Tuesday on the Fraser River and in Burrard Inlet.
The exercise will simulate the potential dispersion of oil should there ever be a spill from Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Pipeline. Kinder Morgan is currently locked in a bitter battle with the City of Burnaby over their proposed pipeline expansion.
Cards marked with serial numbers will be dropped into the water, carrying a message to report the location where the card is found.
Researchers say the locations where the cards are recovered will show just how far oil could disperse in the event of a spill.
The data will also help researchers understand what communities and areas could be affected.
In 2013, researchers conducted a similar simulation, dropping 1,000 cards into the water. To see where those cards ended up, visit the Salish Sea Spill Map here.
