UPDATE: 24 hour commercial salmon fishery now underway on the Fraser River

WATCH: Commercial gillnetters are taking full advantage of a 24 hour sockeye salmon opening in the province. Jill Bennett has the latest.

It’s a busy day on the Fraser River today with the 24 hour opening of the commercial salmon fishery.

The opening targets sockeye, Chinook, chum and pink salmon. The opening runs from 8 a.m. Monday to 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The latest numbers from DFO estimate seven million sockeye running the Fraser.

Depending on the success of this fishery and the next analysis of the run, there could be another opening for fishermen Wednesday.

A decision will be made Tuesday evening.

It’s one of the best years for the number of fish returning in the Fraser.

The last banner year was four years ago when about 30 million sockeye returned.

The fish returning now are part of that four year cycle.
