Grizzly bear alert cancelled north of Squamish

VANCOUVER – WildSafeBC, the District of Squamish and the Conservation Officer Service have now cancelled an alert in the Squamish region about a grizzly bear in the Cheekye Fan area.

This area included the Squamish River to the west, the Ray Peters Trail network and north of the landfill on Squamish Valley Road.

The grizzly bear was sighted in the landfill on Sunday, July 6, and Conservation Officers were concerned it was still hanging around. Officials say while it is not common to have a grizzly in the area, it is not unheard of.

The trail area was not been closed but residents and visitors were being advised to keep dogs on a leash and make noise.

Report any wildlife sightings to the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277.

People are still being warned to not leave out any food or attractants in the area as the bears are hungry and will be looking for an easy meal.
