Murder investigation launched after man dies following mall stabbing

CALGARY- A man who was stabbed outside of Marlborough Mall last week has died from his injuries, prompting a murder investigation.

Police were called to the mall just before midnight on Friday June 20, after the man was found suffering from stab wounds. It’s believed he was attacked by a group of people, possibly made up of youths.

The victim was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, and died on Tuesday. He has been identified as 45-year-old Gabriel Okeynan of Calgary.

A 16-year-old was later taken into custody and charged with robbery. After consulting with the Crown, the teen now faces second-degree murder charges.

A second youth is currently being interviewed by police, but so far has not been charged.

“It is believed this was a random incident,” said S/Sgt. Colin Chisholm from the Calgary Police Service. “Investigators are working  to confirm a motive.”
