TORONTO — An arena version of the 1970s rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar starring John Lydon of Sex Pistols and Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child has been scrapped.

The show was scheduled to stop in Toronto on June 26, Winnipeg on July 4, Regina on July 5, Edmonton on July 6 and Vancouver on July 12.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Producers, including Toronto’s Michael Cohl, pulled the plug last Friday with little fanfare and no explanation.

A message on the official website said: “All purchased tickets will be refunded. Tickets purchased online and via telephone will be automatically refunded. Tickets purchased from outlets/venue box office must be returned to that location for refund.”

The tour was about to kick off its 54-city run on June 9.

Jesus Christ Superstar was also set to star ‘N Sync singer JC Chasez, Brandon Boyd of Incubus and Ben Forster.
