Geography

A riding sandwiched between old Toronto and Etobicoke, this district is bordered by Humber River to the west, Highway 401 to the north, the CPR Rail line to the south and the CN Rail line to the east.

The 2011 and 2007 general elections and the 2006 byelection have all featured the NDP’s Paul Ferreira going against the Liberals’ Laura Albanese. All three have been decided by fewer than 1,000 votes, with Ferreira winning the byelection and Albanese winning the two subsequent general elections.

There is a marked split in voting at the CPR/CNR rail line that travels diagonally along York South West, with those east supporting the Liberals, and those west supporting the NDP.

In the 2011 Census, 19.6% listed Black as their ethnicity, the highest in the province.
