Geography

The Nickel Belt riding goes as far north as the outskirts of Timmins and stretches south to Killarney Provincial Park and French River Park. The largest population base is in the Valley East district north of Sudbury, home to a number of small French communities.

History

NDP MPP France Gélinas was re-elected in this riding by over 9,000 votes in 2011, continuing a 40-year run for the party in Nickel Belt. It was the party’s largest victory in this riding since 1990 when former Finance Minister Floyd Laurghren was elected to his seventh term.

By the numbers

French is the mother tongue of 41.1 per cent of residents in the similarly shaped federal riding of Nickel Belt, the second-highest total in Ontario.
