Geography

Part of Ontario’s cottage country. this rural riding is centered around the sprawling municipality of Kawartha Lakes and includes the Victoria region, rural areas of Peterborough, and the southern part of Algonquin Park.

History

Former PC MPP Laurie Scott retook this riding in 2011, defeating Liberal Rick Johnson by nearly 6000 votes. Scott was first elected in 2003, but stepped aside in 2009 so that John Tory, then PC leader, could run in a byelection after losing his seat in the 2007 general election. However, Tory lost to Johnson by just under 1000 votes. Prior to that, PC MPP Chris Hodgson held a seat covering much of the riding from 1994 to 2003.

By the numbers

It’s the oldest riding in southern Ontario, with a median age of 46.3, and its population decreased by 1.3 per cent between the last two censuses. English is the mother tongue for 93.2 per cent, the second highest number in the province.
